The last few days have been brutal for our chickens! We have lost 4 of them to the heat since last Friday :( There is just no escaping the temperature and humidity, even in the shade. We have been spraying them with cool water and soaking the ground in places where they can lay and take a dirt, or in this case, a mud bath.
After church today, Kevin decided he would weather the heat with the chickens and get his fall garden planted before he flies out tomorrow. And wouldn't you know it, God is on top of things again. He saw our little patch of the earth with our newly tilled soil, freshly planted seeds, and a flock of very hot chickens and said, "Here is a present, just for you :)" Now we are sitting indoors with temperatures 20 degrees cooler, watching and listening to the most beautiful sounds and lights imaginable. Oh, and we can't forget the smell. Nothing smells better than rain! And I have to say, it is much more entertaining than the 4th of July here. The fireworks laws are a bit disappointing for a family who is used to the big TEXAS bangs.
Tomorrow, hopefully I can take some pics of our broilers, who are quite the little butterballs at the young age of 11 days. Our two new little keets (baby guineas) and one little turkey are settling in with their new friends rather nicely. We lost one of the turkeys yesterday. Not sure if it was from the heat or he was just sick. As for the other three little girls, they slept the night in the coop with their big brothers and sisters. We decided to name the white (I'm not sure what he/she is), Peacock, because of the fluff on the top of it's noggin :) Plus, the name is suitable for a boy or girl.
Now we are gonna settle in for the evening and begin preparations for Bibimbap. That is a Korean dish our Okinawan landlord taught us how to make. It is super delicious!!! Oh how I wish I had that special sauce from his restaurant.
